What I'm Currently Watching 3.3 - 4.7

If you want to know about a show or movie I mention more in-depth - drop a comment! I'll respond back or decide it may warrant a full review post if there's enough interest.

Definitely went over a week this time, but hey, it is what it is now.

On TV:

Walker - I was very hesitant about this show at first. The first couple episodes were heavy with family drama and I was looking for a show with more action and plot. However, as the show has progressed I feel like it has found a better balance between the two and is turning into more of what I was expecting from a Texas Ranger show. This probably has to do with Walker’s home being the CW. I feel like with any show on that network it takes the first few episodes to really find its groove. But being a CW show, the cast is phenomenal and you can definitely tell there is a great team behind it. I’m excited to see where the rest of the season goes!

In Theatre:

Godzilla vs. Kong - I enjoyed this movie and I was skeptical at first whether it would be good or not. I will be posting a film review of it so I won’t mention it for very long here. I will say that I saw it at a Cut! by Cinémark and I was very impressed with the Covid-19 safety procedures, the food, the comfy chairs, and the quality of the screen. Due to the grand nature of this film, if you feel safe going to a theater, I highly suggest watching it on the big screen.

Netflix:

New Girl - Yes, a rewatch, but so worth it. This is my go to show for getting ready, relaxing after a bad day at work, and when trying to fall asleep. If it ever gets taken off of Netflix I don’t know what I’ll do.

Brian Regan: On the Rocks - I had a real need for some good stand up and that’s how I stumbled upon this Netflix special. I hadn’t heard of Brian Regan before but I thought his performance was relatable and authentic. I laughed as I watched it and I found myself looking for more of his work after. I also enjoyed that his routine wasn’t full of jokes I’d be embarrassed for my mother to overhear...if you know what I mean.

The Crew - I really loved this show. I binged it all in about a day. I thought the jokes were funny and the cast had great chemistry. The cast is a great mix of familiar and fresh faces and it was great watching them work together. I hope it gets a season 2. I know there has been some controversy surrounding some of the gendered jokes but as I watched it I didn’t hear anything that bothered me. I also enjoyed that even though it was a show about a pit crew you didn’t have to know a lot about the racing industry to understand the jokes or plot points.

Murder Mystery - Okay I rewatched again here, but I forgot about this film and it’s such a fun watch! It found a really great mix of comedy and real action. The outlandish plot actually found a footing and seemed mildly realistic. After watching again, I’ve decided Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler need to work together again soon. They play off of each other well and create memorable scenes together.

Prime Video:

Baywatch (the Unrated Extended cut) - So, I have seen the Baywatch movie. I actually saw it in theaters when it first came out. However, I did not know an unrated extended cut existed so this does not technically count as a rewatch. Overall, there were a couple very short scenes added but in general it was the same. I do feel that the transitions weren’t as smooth in this version compared to the theatrical release. I don’t know if this is due to trying to squeeze in as much as possible for the extended part or where exactly the disconnect happened. The movie was still funny though and I still love all the cast members. I never understood why this movie got the criticism that it did. It was clearly supposed to be a satire/comedy so I don’t know why people reviewed it like it was an action/mystery-thriller.

Hulu:

Veronica Mars - Call me guilty, because I’m rewatching this one too. It’s has been several years since I saw it last but it is just such a satisfying show. They found such a great way to have teenagers deal with outlandish and adult scenarios without seeming corny or too unrealistic. That is something not accomplished easily and at least with shows I have seen lately, no one else has done it as effectively. The closest would be Outer Banks, and definitely not Riverdale (if you know the connection you get the mention here). I admire most about this show how the characters go through all different kinds of drama while keeping their personalities in tact, and in doing so, create relatable and authentic performances that keep me wanting more.

So that’s what I’ve been up to! I’ve been trying to mix it up lately and watch new and old shows. As you can tell, I’m a rewatcher. With my limited TV time lately I don’t like to be disappointed so I tend to go back to old favorites. That being said, I want to try something totally new and try to spend the next week working my way through Netflix’s Top 10. Expect next week’s What I’m Watching to be mostly Netflix titles.

With that being said, here’s what I would watch if I was you and you are looking for:

Something comedic - Brian Regan: On the Rocks

Something lighthearted - The Crew

Some adult humor - Baywatch

Something bingeworthy - Veronica Mars

A new network show - Walker

A new movie - Godzilla vs. Kong

Looking to next week, I know so far that I’ll be watching Primal, The Irregulars, and as much of Netflix’s Top 10 that I can get through.
