Here it is, my first post on what I am spending my time watching. If you want to know about a show or movie more in-depth - drop a comment! I'll respond back or decide it may warrant a full review post if there's enough interest.

On TV: Resident Alien

This show is reminding me of older SyFy shows like Eureka. SyFy used to be my favorite channel on TV but lately all the shows on there are just space-grunge and they aren’t the fun and crazy shows that made me love the channel. Which is why I was so EXCITED to hear about Resident Alien and see the trailers for it. The show is about three episodes in now and it has the potential to be one of my new favorites. I think its biggest draws are that it has well-thought out character relationships and balances comedy with serious scenes well. If you are into the science fiction genre this is definitely a show for you to watch. And, even if you aren’t but enjoy good comedic timing, you should try it out anyways.

Netflix

Oo boy did I watch a lot on Netflix this past week.

How to Get Away with Murder:

I know I’m late to this show...but dang if it isn’t sucking me in! I’m on season 3 episode 4 right now and I am happily surprised I’m three seasons in and it isn’t becoming terribly tedious. I fully think that is due to an incredible writing staff. The characters are dealing with the same crazy over-the-top scenarios but because they’re built up well with their own background stories, it works. It’s safe to say I’m excited to see where the rest of season 3 goes.

Fate: The Winx Saga:

Well, it definitely isn’t the animated series, and I think that’s okay. I’m on episode 4 of its first season and I’m not sure if Netflix will be giving it a second. I think from what I’ve seen so far I know I would want to watch more. There are some scenes where the teenage drama takes over the plot too much but that is something a second season could improve on. I like the plot lines and I look forward to finishing out the episodes and seeing how far the bad guys get before someone figures them out. The show has a good cast and my mom and her friends approve of the show (which is a big deal, they’re not fans of much) so I think it would be worth Netflix’s time and money to give it at least a second go around.

What’s New Scooby-Doo:

I love Scooby-Doo, always have. It’s my go to show for falling asleep to nowadays. Plus, we have our dog Jax who looks like Scooby-Doo so I like making him watch it with me sometimes.

Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel:

I’ve watched enough ghost hunting shows to recognize the name of the Cecil Hotel. This documentary definitely took a turn and a half away from the normal supernatural-vibe shows about the Cecil. I was not expecting it to make the comments on cyber bullying and web sleuthing that it did - but here we are. I do think the comments on cyber bullying were important to make in a case like this and should have been explored a bit further. There were some slower points that I did not fully understand the meaning of because they went on for so long. I did feel like a big part of this documentary was someone wanting to make comments on Skid Row in LA and try to get more eyes on that issue. That being said, Skid Row should get its own documentary if that was the reasoning of adding it to this documentary so often and as in-depth as it did. I felt like they could have used shorter scenes of Skid Row background to drive home the hotel was not in a safe area and made more in this documentary speak to Elisa Lam and the conspiracy theories surrounding her case. There were so many different things explored in-depth aside from Elisa Lam vanishing at the Cecil that it confused me as to what the true point of the documentary was. But overall I did enjoy the documentary and it does have me wanting to watch more Netflix crime docs.

Finding Ohana:

I loved this film! It will definitely be one I rewatch soon. The chemistry between the cast is amazing, and as someone with a younger sibling I feel qualified to make that statement (watch the movie, it'll make sense). The movie was also very visually appealing. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and thought it flowed well. My mom and I both agreed it definitely had a Goonies-vibe to it. I personally feel it went far enough away from the Goonies to say that this movie stands alone rather than as an updated Goonies. I know at least one of the cast members said they *may* have plans for a second movie if Netflix greenlights it and I can with full confidence I hope (and think they should) get a second film.

Prime Video: Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders

Yup, I rewatched a Scooby-Doo movie on Amazon Prime Video. I was watching an alien episode of What’s New Scooby-Doo and it reminded of this movie, which is one of my all-time favorite Scooby-Doo movies so I rented it. And, after so many years, it still holds up.

So that’s what I’ve been watching over the past week! There’s a lot of different genres and types of shows and movies out there - and apparently I wanted to prove that myself hah. I had fun watching these shows this week. I either actually laughed at the show or it made me think about the world, which I also consider fun because I dislike being complacent.

With that being said, here’s what I would watch if I was you and you are looking for:

Something witty - Resident Alien

Something thought provoking - Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel

Something nostalgic - Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders

Something for the kiddos - What’s New Scooby-Doo

Something dramatic - How to Get Away with Murder

A new Netflix show to binge - Fate: The Winx Saga

Looking to next week, I know so far that I’ll be watching more How to Get Away with Murder, Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer, and The X-Files (again).
