10/10 Will laugh watching this movie

Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman in My Spy (2020)

Honestly, I was so excited to rewatch this movie so I could write this review. I had such a fun time watching the movie, it even made my mom laugh the whole way through! And my mother is the person who falls asleep 15 minutes in on a regular basis. I promise not to spend this whole review talking about how funny it is though.

The details of a film’s star rating in this blog generally go as follows:

  1. 3 Stars for beginning, middle, and end of the story

  2. Star for casting/acting

  3. Star for everything else- cinematography, soundtrack, etc.

  4. Bonus Star 1- for marketing, release date, etc.

  5. Bonus Star 2- for storyline fitting in with prequels/sequels, end credit scenes, etc.

If you would like to see a more detailed outline of how a film’s rating is created by me, there is a blog post on my dedicated page to just that. Also, I don’t do spoilers. I won’t mention any major plot twists or endings but I will hint at things and mention scenes that don’t give away any of those major points.

Let’s get into it.

Beginning: Full Star. My Spy starts off strong with a movie reference, a romantic movie at that. It set the tone for the comedy throughout the rest of the film. The plot was set up nicely and you learned a lot about the characters early on without it being too “on the nose.”

Middle: I gave a full star here because of how well the funny moments added to, rather than detracted from, the story. Normally when you come across a movie that tries to be funny as well as action-packed, you end up with stalled scenes that then move into awkward transitions to try and pick the storyline back up again. The whole creative team behind this movie did a great job evenly moving between comedy, character relationships, and action. The only thing I wish we had seen more of was Victor’s relationship with his brother. He obviously hated his brother but we never fully found out why and I felt that could have added a great story element.

End: Only a half star here, for a very specific reason. The final action scene, with the crazy plane crash, was too unrealistic - especially in combination with the mostly believable rest of the movie. However, the character relationships were finalized nicely so it was, overall, a satisfying ending.

Casting/Acting: Full star. The cast, and chemistry of said cast, can make or break a comedy. I could not think of a more perfect cast for My Spy. Dave Bautista may be my favorite now, he created such a perfect mix of awkward/caring/funny. Parisa Fitz-Henley gave an insanely relatable performance as single mother Kate and I thoroughly enjoyed any time she was on screen. Ken Jeong talks about emotional intelligence, and I am always ready to hear that. Chloe Coleman cast as Sophie might be my favorite casting choice ever. Devere Rogers and Noah Danby made a great duo. Overall, the chemistry between all of the cast members is unreal in an amazing way and I could go on further but I will not. But before I go on, I would like to formally nominate Blueberry for Best Scene Stealer.

Everything Else: Full Star. Aside from the plane crash I mentioned earlier, the action scenes were all well-placed and realistic enough for a spy movie. Those action scenes are graphic, this is a PG-13 film after all. The music choices were also nice - well chosen and well timed.

Bonus 1: Half star here. I felt the trailers gave a good indication of how the film would be comedy-wise. Nothing else about the marketing or release date was overly positive or negative.

Bonus 2: No star, but I do hope for a sequel. I would watch a My Spy 2, but if we do not get one I would ask for a movie where Sophie is all grown up and has become a spy herself.

Overall: My mom and I watched this movie together, and we both agreed that My Spy is reminiscent of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s comedy movies. More action and plot than his films but the comedy aspects were very similar. I don’t know what it is, but there is something so satisfying about watching a nine-year old play a grown-ass man like a fiddle.

This movie will make its way into my rotation of frequently watched movies. It is a lovely combination of humor and plot that is unlike any other spy film that I have seen to date. Most films go too far into the comedy or are all action - My Spy found a way to accomplish both.

So let me know:

What movie references did you catch throughout My Spy?
