Feel free to debate me on this
The following is my compilation of what I feel were the best, and worst, films I saw in 2019. Note, I said the films that I saw. This is not an exhaustive list of all the movies that came out in 2019 but rather how I feel about the movies that I did have the opportunity to see. Like I said, feel free to debate me on this.
For a Roundup - I will list what I felt was the best and worst film in the category and then briefly go into why I feel that way. The categories/genres I will go over are: Horror, Action, Sequel, Reboot, and Family Friendly. You might notice that some of the films I chose are ones that could go in multiple categories. I put them in the category I feel they most wholly represent.
Horror:
Best: Pet Sematary (2019). This movie was visceral, in the good way for a horror movie. It scared me in all the right ways but I was still able to sleep that night, and I have a cat so I was fully prepared to not sleep at all. If you are into horror flicks or enjoy Stephen King, I highly recommend this movie.
Worst: Crawl (2019). I love monster movies so I expected to like this one, but I did not. I think anyone who knows even a tiny bit about alligators would dislike this movie. It was over the top and unbelievable in a way that made it seem like I was watching a parody instead of a horror movie.
Action:
Best: 6 Underground (2019). I haven’t been a huge fan of Netflix action films but this one completely turned me around. I was such a fan of it that I told almost everyone I know to go watch it, and they also enjoyed it. It had a great combination of action, plot, and character growth.
Worst: MIB International (2019). I am a huge Men In Black (1997) fan so I was excited to see this new take on it. However, it flopped for me. The MIB franchise has always been heavy on the action side with sarcastic comedy thrown in but this film tried to rely too heavily on the comedy and the action fell short.
Sequel:
Best: It Chapter 2 (2019). I only have good things to say about this movie. It picked up from the first one seamlessly and brought the characters full circle. It’s hard to think of a film like this as believable, but the cast and crew made the characters’ struggles seem realistic.
Worst: Toy Story 4 (2019). This one hurts to say, but I have to say it. I was not a fan of Woody’s decision at the end. It seemed out of place to me because of what he spent the first three movies trying to accomplish. I could see how a character could end up at that choice but I didn’t feel like there was enough explanation to bring him to that conclusion.
Reboot:
Best: Little Women (2019). This film did a great job of paying homage to the original source material as well as its predecessor film. The cast was wonderfully chosen and they really felt like a family.
Worst: Hellboy (2019). The original Hellboy film (2004) is one of my favorite movies and David Harbour has the perfect on-screen attitude for the main character so I was excited to see this reboot. However, it was bad. The plot was iffy and it was gorey only for gore’s sake.
Family Friendly:
Honestly I don’t have any “worst” movies for this category. I never saw a Family Friendly film in 2019 that I felt didn’t deliver on the family-friendly promise. So, instead I will list below my top 3 favorites. I also didn’t mean to choose all Disney films, it just happened to be that way.
The Lion King (2019) was great. It was visually stunning with a great cast and stayed true to the original animated film.
Noelle (2019) was a good one not only for the family, or Christmastime, but also felt like the start of a good franchise. I enjoyed the flip on the stereotypical Santa story.
Togo (2019) felt like a breath of fresh air. I really enjoyed watching a film about a dog that was more uplifting overall than simply about a dog’s relationship to their person.
As always, drop a comment and let me know:
What were your favorite films of 2019?
Are there any categories/genres you would like to see included in my Roundup list?
Is there a film listed above that you’d like me to do a full review on?
